Attention latex fetishists. Take a break from polishing your corset and enjoy Dressing for Pleasure. John Samson’s remarkable documentary short was made in 1977 and had a huge impact on the UK fashion and punk scenes. The film is strange, funny and never judges its subjects, giving us a peek at a sexual subculture that was already thriving nearly four decades before Fifty Shades.
Do you like to be aurally aroused? A new study confirms that listening to new music stimulates the same pleasure response in the brain as having sex. The scientists were studying brain activity in an effort to predict people’s music buying patterns.
“What makes music so emotionally powerful is the creation of expectations. Activity in the nucleus accumbens is an indicator that expectations were met or surpassed, and in our study we found the more activity we see in this brain area while people are listening to music, the more money they are willing to spend.”
The article notes that this is similar to what happens in the brain during other pleasurable activities.
Similar connections were also seen between the nucleus accumbens and other brain areas involved in high level sequencing, complex pattern recognition and assigning emotional and reward value to stimuli.
In other words, the brain assigns value to music through the ancient reward circuitry of dopamine which reinforces behaviours absolutely necessary for our survival – such as eating and sex.
These connections might explain the popularity of adult toys like the Club Vibe and Better than Chocolate which convert music into pleasurable vibrations and also why certain songs just seem to put us in the mood.

Today we learned about the passing of porn legend Harry Reems who starred in the breakthrough adult film Deep Throat. Born Herbert Streicher, Reems, a former Marine, starred in over 100 adult features, but Deep Throat was his most notorious film. Reems was paid $100 for a day’s work on set. When the film’s release created a nationwide controversy, Reems was federally prosecuted “for conspiracy to distribute obscene material across state lines.” The conviction was later overturned.
Reems always wanted to cross over into mainstream movies and was even cast in Grease before being fired due to his past.
“Acting was my true love, and I buried that possibility by going into adult films,” Reems told Dave Itzkoff for a 2005 New York magazine piece. “The writing was on the wall. There was no place for me in conventional entertainment.”
In the 80s, Reems moved to Park City, got sober and reinvented himself as a real estate broker. Reems kept his porn name.

“Close your eyes and ears,” warns an off-screen voice, “because here comes a sex comedy that’s all about bonking and banging.” Then Bavarian character Sepp appears on screen. As he assumes a wide-legged stance in an Alpine pasture, a cow gazes awe-struck at the fly of his lederhosen. Thunderbolts shoot out of his tight leather shorts, bulging with excessive man-power.
That’s the opening for this fascinating article on the 70s genre of softcore “lederhosen porn” in Bavarian cinema. Read about the amazing career of Austrian auteur Franz Marischka atDer Spiegeland be sure to click through the gallery of NSFW images from some of his films.
This past weekend, Salon ran an interesting piece on the explosive popularity of sex toys. The article links this development to the phenomenal success of the Fifty Shades book series, but also to a number of high profile media appearances for The Pleasure Chest.
Salon mentions Kathy Griffin’s recent segment filmed at our West Hollywood store and her subsequent interview with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. Griffin’s segments followed Pleasure Chest appearances on Our America with Lisa Ling and Starter Wives.
Salon suggests that America is in the midst of a fourth sexual revolution, following past cultural upheavals in the 1840s, the 1920s and the 1960.
“Sex 4.0 is grounded in a legal and cultural belief that consenting adults have a right to privacy … and to pleasure. This is adult – consensual and noncommercial — sex after Roe v. Wade in ’73, after AIDS and safe sex, and after Lawrence v. Texas in 2003. Equally critical, it is sex after the wide-scale adoption of the Internet and smartphones that revolutionized communications, including pornography.”
