Gay porn star Conner Habib posted a great article today about the relationship between porn and LGBT equality. Two months ago, Habib, a former college instructor, was asked by queer students to speak at their community college’s Sex Week. But when the school’s president learned that Habib planned to link the LGBT struggle to porn, his appearance was cancelled. This was especially disappointing because it was the students themselves who had asked Habib to visit.
Habib argues that there’s a connection between access to gay porn and positive self identity for gay people, especially for those living in small towns or homophobic societies.
When a gay man lives somewhere where his identity is threatened, it’s clear how sex – including pornography – and sexuality are intertwined. His sexual imagination, which is criminalized, matches the sexual images of gay pornography (which are also criminalized). Since acting out his imagination through sex would be to risk his life, the access to the images is safer. The images, created by gay men wherever it’s legal to create them, provide empowerment and diminish alienation.
